Print Lives!

Student newspapers often exist in semi-obscurity. But they are often the only media to provide news coverage of a campus on an ongoing basis. Glendale College's student newspaper is the El Vaquero. We will take a look at it in class.

Questions...

•What stories in this issue will probably only appear in the El Vaquero because they are GCC specific?

•What ads in the paper are directed at the GCC student?

•What skills are the students on the paper developing, and how can they be put to use in the world beyond newspapers?

•What should a student newspaper do? What can it do to appeal to young adults who do not usually read newspapers?

CicLAvia, Sunday Oct. 7

CicLAvia, the twice-yearly bicycling/skating/walking/just-hanging-out event where 10 miles of city streets are given over to non-motorized traffic, will walk and roll through the heart of Los Angeles this Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event, which effectively showcases the youthful, multicultural, irreverent energy of urban Los Angeles, visits sites including Downtown's Historic Core, Olvera Street, Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza, Little Tokyo, and MacArthur Park and Exposition Park.

Although CicLAvia draws mostly bicyclists, there are activities for others as well. Downtown's new Grand Park will will have activities for families with very young children. Walkers can participate in a parade down Figueroa. Olvera Street is hosting a Mole' Festival. And Curbed LA has created an architectural guide to historic buildings along the route.

More than 100,000 people are expected to participate. I will be there as faculty adviser to GCC's Coalition of Urban Cyclists. If you want to drop by and say hi, we plan to meet in front of L.A. City Hall at noon. I'll be captaining a white tandem.

For details, go to the CicLAvia website or to the event's Facebook page.

Your Student Newspaper

Glendale College has had a student newspaper since the late 1920s. But as conditions have changed for professional newspapers, the same holds true for the student media. GCC's El Vaquero is available in both print and online versions, and the online edition does a few things differently. In class, we will talk about both versions of the paper, and what makes them appealing.

Questions...

•In what ways is the print edition better for the reader?

•In what ways is the online edition better for the reader?

•What types of stories should the El Vaquero focus upon?

•What publications should the El Vaquero try to be more like?

Students Talk About Race

This is an excellent GCC program that trains students to do good in the community. Below is a notice about it from Hoover Zariani.

Hi Everyone:

Just wanted to make everyone aware of a special opportunity for your students!

The STAR program (Students Talk About Race) is a very unique opportunity for our students to get diversity training as well as valuable facilitator training.

The STAR program trains GCC students as facilitators and places them (in teams of 2-3 students) at local middle and high school to facilitate a discussion on the issues of:

Racism (Individual and Institutional)
Sexism
Homophobia
Prejudice
Stereotypes
and much more!

These topics relate to a variety of classes such as sociology, psychology, history, social science, ethnic studies, child development, etc.

Students who wish to participate MUST ATTEND a training on Saturday, September 22nd from 10-4 p.m. They must SIGN UP FOR THE PROGRAM BY SEPTEMBER 20th. They can come into our office and complete an application or request an application by email. Apps are also available on our website at www.glendale.edu/csi

Thank you for sharing this amazing program with your students. It is a life-changing experience for many who have participated.
