Are We Losing the Human Touch?

You hear stories about people getting fired or dumped or whatever by text message and you cringe. You see people spilling out their most private thoughts on social media and you cringe. How we express ourselves and how we interact has certainly changed in recent years. Young police officers have to be taught how to talk with people, for example. NPR reports.

Questions...

•Does social media make us more social or less social?

•Name things we do over social media and the Internet that we used to do face to face or in a phone call?

•Who besides police officers need to read face-to-face social cues?

•Schools used to teach "the social graces"? Should we revive that?

Free Speech Vs. Threats

The following is a Medianote Classic. It was originally presented to MC101 students in October 2016.

The Arizona Republic is the daily newspaper based in Phoenix, Arizona. Generally, The Republic is very conservative on its editorial page, which makes it a good match for the region of the country that it serves. However, the paper gained a bit of national attention recently when it endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Some locals reacted badly. NPR reports.

Questions...

•Is free speech practical? Why is it worth the trouble?

•Vigorous opinions are protected speech. Threats are not. Where do you draw the line between the two?

•Has extreme speech on the Internet made our political speech more extreme, or is something else going on?

•Has the deluge of information from the Internet, cable TV and other places made us more tolerant of other opinions, or less? Why?

Internship Opportunity

This internship is not until summer, but Winter MC101s may want to take note of it anyway...

He is a brief overview of the program.

KJLH (102.3 FM) is an Urban Adult Contemporary radio station serving the Los Angeles area. It plays R&B and classic soul music under the format, and occasionally plays some Hip-Hop, Gospel and Smooth Jazz tracks. Licensed to the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, California, the station is owned by Icon Legend Stevie Wonder, and operates from its studios in Inglewood.

102.3 KJLH Radio FM Internship Program is a competitive internship program that provides eligible interns with exposure to the operations of a major entertainment radio station. During the internship, interns will gain insight into the inner workings of the business and industry dynamics. In addition, interns will work on project-based assignments for the promotions, digital, sales, programing and production department and participate in development events that will enhance their overall internship experience. (All interns most receive college credit for the program.)
