Not Naming Names
There are times when the news media holds back pieces of information, and one of those times was after the Orlando shootings. Some in the news media decided to not use the name of the mass shooter. NPR reports.
Questions...
•How is this an example of the media literacy tenet "All media messages are constructions"?
•What reasons are there for using the shooter's name. What are the reasons for not using his name?
•When else would it be ethical to hold back facts from a news story?
If you were the News Editor at NPR, would you use the Orlando shooter's name in a story? Why or why not?
