Movie Theaters in the Post-"Bubble" Marketplace

The low-budget art house film "Bubble" will open this Friday to considerable controversy within the movie business. But it's not the content of the film that is at issue ... it's the distribution schedule.

What effect does simultaneous release effect on awards. Obviously for the academy awards need to be shown 7 days in LA or NY to be eligible, but does dropping the movie on DVD 4 days later effect it's award eligibility?

I think one of the interesting thing about DVD purchase over going to the movie theater has a lot to do with movie price. Even if my wife and I go to the movie theaters were dropping almost $20 which is the price of purchasing the movie.

I really think that idea to use the ticket as a coupon to buy the DVD cheaper in a theater is a decent idea in theory, but in the realm of online marketplaces (ebay, amazon, etc.) those things will be rapidly disemintated through society and I think that the companies behind the DVD release would loose a lot of money over a little increase theater revenue.

Just some thoughts.
