Blogging Workshop Participants... Post Here!

On Saturday, March 25 a group of Mass Comm 101 students will go to the Museum of Television & Radio.

Beverly Hills will be graced with the presence of Mass Comm 101 students (not to mention yours truly) on Saturday morning March 25. We will travel to the Museum of Television & Radio to attend an event entitled "Blogging and Journalism: Where Do Their Paths Cross?"

The purpose of this Club MediaNote entry is to give the MC101s a place to post their comments on the topic "Will Blogs Be a Major Source of News, Opinion and Information in the Years Ahead?" Remember, to get extra credit for this outing you must

1. Attend the event and sign the sign-in sheet, and
2. Post a comment of 200-250 words on the question above.

Hit the comment button at the end of this post.

***POSTSCRIPT, SATURDAY 1:45 P.M.: We had a turnout of 19 MC101s and guests. We listened to a very interesting panel that compared and contrasted blogs and bloggers with mainstream journalism and journalists. I'm interested in reading your comments. Hopefully they will be as lively and varied as the panel's opinions.

Here's part of our blogging group at the Museum of Television & Radio. The quote is from media theorist Marshall ("The Medium Is the Message") McLuhan.

Since I am a blogger, today’s event was interesting for me. Actually I had never cared about blogging that is a biggest tools which is changing and influencing the future of media till I joined this event, though I post my blogs generally twice a week. So It was really good opportunity to hear about what the blogging is for journalists who are flourishing in various fields of media today.

5 to 10 years from now, we will be able to get more different choices to use the media, such as Internet TV and radio, to get information by using just one remote control, a computer, one panelist said. Blogging has a big possibility to be one of the choices today because it has a technology to allow to change information immediately. That means it can always be updated rapidly. It will be very useful way to report news because news is happened by every second and anywhere in the world. People could know the very latest news whenever they want to by using blogging’s high technology. Moreover, we discussed about whether blogging is journalism. One of the panelists said very interesting thing that now we can update our voices, photos and videos on our blogs by using iPods and digital cameras, and this makes blogging journalism. It is certainly easier and quicker way to create the latest news articles than publishing paper news. So in my opinion, blogs will be a major source of news in the near future.

I am not a blogger but it is to my best interest to know about it how media is being manipulated, interpreted, and given/shared with the public. it has pros and cons to be a blogger. Weblogs generally cover a particular person's life or a particular subject matter. Weblogs consist of short journal entries (usually a paragraph or two) on a webpage. Each weblog entry (also known as a post) will typically contain one or more links to related material being discussed in the entry. with several links to related news stories or sources which sometimes is not clear or exact. it might even be just. As one of the panelist said Saturday, that is not an issue now. and a second commentary to the discussion, this is going to be around for a long time. Whoever blogs has to be responsible for his own commentaries on the web.

I feel that as time is passing blogs are becoming more and more popular, and are being used more frequently. You can find blogs pretty much anywhere nowadays, including game sites, downloading sites, and even for our class website. People use blogs as a form of communication between individuals, a small group of people, or even a large number of people. Blogs can be used to put out ones opinion in order for others to see their point of view about certain issues. People use blogs to spread word about acts that they feel should be put to an end, and it even helps spread the word out to gain people's attention and can maybe even help organize a protest. On Saturday I enjoyed and learned from the panel and the mediator. The fact that the mediator had somewhat of a negative opinion about blogging really helped bring out the different point of views from different people. I feel that as time goes on, people will still be using blogs to post the silliest and fun things, to the most important and controversial topics. Through blogging, people are and will keep sharing news, opinions, and information about many different topics, because it really helps get a persons point across. However, I still feel that people will write blogs just for fun as well.

Weblogs like Instapundit and Andrew Sullivan are good examples of how far a weblog and its author can get mass media attention, but in countries like “Iran” when censorship of press is high and becoming a democratic state is a dream for political activist’s weblogs could have another application too.

A few years ago Hossein Derakhshan a friend of mine migrated to Canada and setup his own Weblog called “Editor Myself”. He also developed some manuals for would be bloggers and encouraged others to blog.

His blog popularity in Iran, forced government to filter his blog on internet and he started to offer his writings via subscription by E-Mail.

His blog now have two section English and Persian and covers almost everything from politics to pop culture. His English blog also might be interesting for western folks.

One can easily find out by reading his weblog that there is no big difference of lifestyle for example teens in LA and Tehran(capital of Iran),they’re going to parties like their peers in LA and listen to pop icons like eminem Britney spears etc..

In political sphere his views and articles has found its way through major newspapers like Los Angeles Times, Guardian ,New York times,…..

While Iran’s notorious president Mahmud Ahmadinejad wanted Israel to be wiped out of the map, Hossein Derakhshan traveled to Israel and setup some interviews with intellectuals and professors there to show, people of Iran has nothing to do with their rulers. Moreover he broke the taboo of traveling to Israel as an Iranian, (Iranians are forbidden by government to travel to Israel, he probably used his Canadian Passport) he also got his articles published in “Haaretz”, the Israel’s prominent newspaper.

After visiting this event, I came to realize that there is a lot of blogging going on out there. This is something new to me. I never looked at blogging as a form of a way to get news across. The only outlook I have on blogs are the ones on xanga and myspace. Blogging to me means a personal entry, basically like a zine. Blog can also propose ur opopin on a certain topic. This is a serious issed because it all depends on the amount of credibility that person has, for them to sit there and type up a blog for millions of people to view. That blog is no good, unless the person who is writing has some sort of credibility in the topic in question. Will Blogs Be a Major Source of News, Opinion and Information in the Years Ahead? I hope they don’t, But it really doesn’t matter what I think. It is what it is. Blogging is taking over, and soon it will be everywhere. As panel explained, this is bigger than us. People are more and more realizing the impact blogging have on the world. This will soon become a way for journalist to express themselves without worrying about censorship and the FCC. So in due time , blogging is taking over.

I was actually never interested in blogging but after attending to this event, it made me realize how this can change so many things in the future. I think blogging will be the next big thing because its so easy to access and since the writes can update it as soon as there is a mistake or a new information on a certain article more people would be interested to read and comment on it. The only problem is that since i see so many wrong data and information on the web or articles that sound true but then turns out it was totally wrong and nobody ever reviewed or edited makes me hold back on trusting blogging. Of course there are bloggings that are edited and very reliable but then again sometimes it is hard to figure out which source is right or wrong. I think that the bloggings should be labeled and edited in the future, so more people can read and rely on whats posted on the web. I agree with Molly saying that bloggings are a voice for those who do not have the apportunity to speak and spread the word around, and for that reason blogging will be more successful in the future.
